A new way to fund your research project!
We know it’s a huge challenge getting research grants from government agencies and foundations. Been there done that.
We’re creating Geekfunder as a new funding platform to prime the pump so you can pilot your scientific research projects. Using Geekfunder, you can share your passion for your research with friends, family, and the interested public to obtain direct contributions; contributions small and large enough to fund proof-of-concept progress leading toward traditional institutional funding.
Geekfunder launches this upcoming summer of 2012.
On Geekfunder, you tell the story of your research project, and why it’s important to our world. You create a funding goal for your project, offer unique perks or rewards for each contribution level you receive, and get the word out using our social promotion tools. If you don’t reach your funding goal, those who contributed don’t get charged. It’s a win win!
How does it differ from a typical NSF or NIH grant?
Crowdfunding your research proposal differs from your typical research grant. All Geekfunder projects include a description, the value to our world, video, updates on progress, and comments from project backers. When the project is completed you share your learnings and results in a story understandable to the general public as the final step of the project.
All your communications are structured to take advantage of and expand your social networks on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google +1, Research Gate, and even Pinterest to obtain funding via contributions from family, friends, and a general public that is interested in science at large. Geekfunder can be used to fund any sized project, although we expect most to be pilot projects, unless the engagement and popularity is so compelling that contributors flock to fund the project.
Project submissions to Geekfunder will be vetted by a core group in the Geekfunder community. If you’d like to become a member of our vetting team, click here.
What does it cost?
It’s free to start. There is no charge to join the Geekfunder community and to launch a research project of your own!
6% Geekfunder Fee . When your project reaches it’s funding goal, Geekfunder charges 6% of the money you raise which includes a credit card transaction fee. This structure encourages you to set a reasonable financial goal, work hard, and publicize your project by getting the word out.
Who can launch a project on Geekfunder?
Geekfunder is focused on scientific projects from pure research, conservation, the environment, to exciting expeditions. It is a great way for scientists to bring their research projects to realization. Project submitters must be able to show an affiliation with a scientific organization, educational institute or be an identifiable member of the open source scientific community.
Geekfunder is open to scientists, researchers, graduate students, even high school students with vetting from their teachers, and anyone passionate about science.
